What Is Turkey Bolognese?

Turkey bolognese is a great way to reduce the fat content and keep this classic of a recipe healthier which is also ideal for meal prep and following a healthy meal plan.

By swapping red meat for lean ground turkey helps keep this recipe macro-friendly that doesn’t compromise on taste or flavor which is a huge bonus if you’re looking to eat healthy meals that you will find comforting.

Although lean turkey mince has a reputation for being dry and bland, this recipe is far from that, and you might be surprised how tender the meat tastes which has been tried and tested multiple times.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Ground Turkey: I used turkey thigh mince for this recipe, which is typically 7% fat and is higher in fat compared to turkey breast mince, which is typically 2% fat. However, there’s a big difference is taste and I still find turkey thigh mince macro-friendly and a far superior choice over breast mince.
  • Tomato Passata: You could use chopped tomatoes, but tomato passata is a better choice for this type of bolognese.
  • Herbs and spices: This recipe definitely needs spice to give it a kick. You can use paprika or red chili, or you can use cayenne pepper if you want to make it hotter. This recipe calls for ground coriander, which is optional but helps with flavor. I also used dried oregano and fresh parsley.
  • Carrot and celery: Traditional ingredients for bolognese.
  • Chicken stock: This is optional, but I used chicken stock instead of beef stock.

Other additions you can consider:

  • Red Wine: a traditional ingredient but works better with red meat.
  • Full Fat Milk: a traditional ingredient but works better with red meat.
  • Beef stock: instead of chicken stock.

What to serve turkey bolognese sauce with:

  • Spaghetti: traditional choice.
  • Tanganelli: another great choice.
  • Spaghetti squash: low-carb variation.
  • Zoodles: another low-carb option.

Turkey Bolognese Meal Prep

This is a fantastic recipe for meal prep because it freezes well, reheats well and lasts in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Just like the red lentil bolognese and spicy bolognese, I often batch cook these meals for the week-ahead which goes well with the pasta of your choice.

I prefer this recipe because it’s very comforting but also macro-friendly which is great for my meal plan to maintain a healthy balanced weight.
